Afghanistan’s trade figures for 2017-2024 show that our exports are still significantly lower than our imports, and the trade deficit is widening, although there has been some progress in recent years. Exports have increased slightly, reaching $1.83 billion in 2023, while imports have increased again, reaching $8.5 billion in 2023. This situation reflects our overreliance on foreign goods and the weakness of domestic production. The message to reduce this existing deficit is clear. Afghanistan must prioritize strengthening domestic industries, expanding exports, and reducing imports in order to have a balanced and self-sufficient economic future.
